5 Innovative Eco-friendly Leather For Your Fashion Trends.

Inour last blog, we understood how the toxic impact of the leather industry on the environment. To tackle this, researchers have come up with different leather alternatives. There are dozens of leather alternatives, but only some are eco friendly. While all vegan leathers protect the rights of animals, only eco-friendly vegan leather can be trusted as a sustainable and ethical alternative to old school leather.

With so many options, it’s important to distinguish between vegan leather alternatives that just check boxes and those that go all the way in their commitment to being 100% earth-friendly and sustainable.

What is vegan leather?

While there is no universally accepted definition, any material that mimics the look and feel of leather but is not produced using animal hides, can be considered vegan leather.

  • PIÑATEX LEATHER

This material is made from wasted parts of the pineapple bush, and is 100% vegan friendly and is also ethical in the sense that it gives pineapple farmers yet another source of income from their crops. The fabric feels like thick cowhide leather, is watertight and very durable.

  • CACTUS LEATHER

Also known as nopal leather or Desserto, this eco friendly vegan leather is made from the sun-dried fibres of cactus plants in Mexico. It’s durable, smooth and water-resistant.

  •  LEATHER PAPER (WASHABLE KRAFT PAPER)

It is made from natural paper fibre that has been tanned, resulting it to be very durable and water resistant, thus the name washable. Washable paper is produced from cellulose fibre. Every time you wash it the more it will give you a leather feel.

  • CORK LEATHER

Long used as a water-resistant, organic material in floor tiling, cork is widely regarded as being one of the most ecologically friendly materials around. It’s easily recycled, and completely natural, and sourcing from cork oak forests for various industries helps prevent desertification and deforestation.

  • LEAF LEATHER

There is a company that transforms natural, raw materials into urban everyday items made from banana, rain trees and lotus leaves. These leather-like materials are incredibly lightweight and can even withstand tropical storms, so you can take these gorgeous bags, wallets and other vegan friendly accessories along with you anywhere you go, from shopping sprees to impromptu trips to the beach.

There are many other leather alternatives. More and more eco friendly vegan leather alternatives are being invented, invested in, and used by fashion-forward brands all the time. It’s never been easier, or more fun, to be eco-conscious.
